Tribal tattoos, tribal tattoos are very common, tribal tattoos are a very old tradition used by indian tribes in America, tribal tattoos still exist today.
The tribal tattoo dates back through time and and is connected to much of our past. The majority of these tribal tattoos represent acupuncture points used in modern times.
So what is a tribal tattoo? What is the meaning of tribal tattoos?
There are many Indian tribes in North America and many different traditions for tribal tattooing. It was common for tribal tattoos to show the tribe the rank of the wearer. It was also common for weapons of war to be tattooed upon the men and it is suggested by some that the women received tattoos of tools used for labor, but the amount of tattoos was kept to a minimum.
The Timucua tribe were heavily tattooed. The Timucua came from the north of what is Florida today. Their tribal tattoos indicated wealth, tribe affiliation, rank, and direct family, their job, acts of strength and acts of bravery. The tribal designs were as very simple in design some were just a few lines or circles in a simple pattern but others were highly involved pieces of art. They did not have sterilised needles as used today but made holes in the flesh with various objects and then soot and juic of berries was rubbed into the open wound. There were many deaths from infection. The Timucua tribe were one of the most heavier tattooed tribes within North American.
There are many tribes in North America that used tattoos to indicate various parts of their lives, or as decoration. The Wichita tattooed dark rings around the eyes of the men. There are also the Inuit tribes of the north. The elderly women of the tribe were normally the experts at tattooing. The tattooist makes a mixtures of urine, lampblack, and graphite for the ink for there tribal artwork. All of these items had a spiritual power and were commonly used to ward off evil spirits. They believed that the tribal tattoos would also prevent and cure sickness associated with the evil spirits. They used a strip of sinew strung through a bone or steel needle, soaked it in the ink and then created the tattoo.
Throughout history it was not the tradition to let the women of the tribe have tattoos. The reason for this was that they were to be denied any adornments or anything that would make them appear equal to the men of the tribe. Although some of the daughters of prominent men were marked with spots on their forehead to represent the sun.
But a woman being the lower species changed drastically over the past couple of hundred years and womens tattoos are much more commonplace these days. Nowadays women are seen wearing tribal roses, tribal butterflies, and the tribal lower-back pieces.
